Toyota 86 Legacy
The number “86” carries many meanings, including the history of Toyota sports cars and the
emotions that went into building the 86.
In the first sense, the number “86” shares the same number as the motor-show model the
“FT-86,” which in turn was based on the AE86, already known and loved by customers. This
naming reflects our hope that, like the AE86, the 86 will be cherished and nurtured by
customers, car shops, and part makers.
In the second sense, the number “86” represents the 86 x 86mm bore and stroke of the newly
developed horizontally opposed engine, in the tradition of authentic sports cars deriving their
names from hardware specifications.
